Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) recently released a data that showed a 36.6 percent rise in the tourist arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in March 2010 as compared with the same month last year. The arrivals of visitors from South Asian countries gained a growth of 35.3 percent with increase in Indian tourist by 35.5 percent, Bangladeshis by 53.8 percent, and Pakistanis 3.2 percent. The remarkable rise of tourists was from China with 114 percent in March. Arrivals from Japan, Malaysia and South Korea also saw 6.8 percent, 38.4 percent and 68.1 percent rise respectively. According to NTB, there is 42 percent growth of arrivals from European countries with the arrivals from major countries like UK going up by 44.9 percent, France by 5.4 percent, Germany by 40.8 percent, and Italy by 44 percent and Netherlands by 128.2 percent. The secretary-general of the UN’s World Tourism Organization (WTO), Taleb Rifai said that the worst was over. “We do think that we are leaving the bad year behind, clearly. The last part of 2009 and the first part of 2010 indicate a bottoming out,” he said. “People are going to continue to want to travel. It’s unstoppable. Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) is launching a separate channel for migrant workers there. The Ministry of Labour and Transport Management (MoLTM) is working under it to get the details of Nepali migrant workers. According to Babu Ram Acharya, a secretary at the ministry of Migration Resource Centre (MRC), it is a priority programme for current fiscal year . MoLTM is working to build a database of migrants workers and TIA is the only authorized airport for foreign bound workers. According to the plan of MoLTM, the channel will run with a well-equipped labour desk to record the status of labourers based on gender, destination, job category, salary and benefits etc. MRC is opened to inform people about the foreign employment and provide counseling. As the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 is fast approaching Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has started to upgrade its Airport Surveillance and Communication systems to welcome the targeted one million tourists. This upgrade in TIA’s facilities is initiated by The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) in accordance to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). CAAN will replaced the present Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) system and the Aeronautical Message Handling System (AMHS) system by the end of 2010. A proposal is also being drafted to replace the existing Airport Surveillance Radar, which has a lifetime of 15 years. Nepal currently has an AFTN system, also known as the Aeronautical Message Switching System (AMSS) which is close to its expiry date, according to Keshav Raj Khanal, Director General, CAAN. Khanal also said that a study team from ICAO is expected to arrive to prepare a proposal for the replacement of the ancient radar.
