Edurne Pasaban, a Spanish mountaineer was offered to be goodwill ambassador for ‘Nepal Tourism Year 2011’, a national tourism campaign. A program was organized in Kathmandu on 22nd May to felicitate Pasaban for summiting all the 14 mountains above 8000m in the world. During the same program, Laxman Bhattarai, Joint Secretary at Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation announced the offer to the Spanish mountaineer. The implementation of the procedures for home stay facility targeting the foreign visitors is at its final stage. Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has been working on it to accommodate more visitors in the rural tourist destination. According to Prachanda Man Shrestha, CEO at NTB, the procedure will legalize the accommodations of tourists in normal home that meet the criteria set by them. As per the present legal provisions, tourists can be accommodated only in star hotels and lodges having at least four rooms, and in teahouses along trekking trails. “The home stay procedures will facilitate the operation of establishments having facilities less than the lodges to accommodate foreign visitors,” Shrestha said. Since hotels and lodges equipped with modern facilities are concentrated only in major cities, the government planned the urban home stay policy.
