A Nepali team of nine women, Everest Women Seven Summits Eco–Action (EWSSE-A), successfully climbed the highest peak Mt Kosciuszko/Targangil (2228 meters) in the Australian continent. In a press meet organized at Nepal Tourism Board Office on July 28, Wednesday Shailee Basnet co-coordinator of EWSSE-A made a presentation to brief the media about their successful mountain climbing attempt in Australia. The team who had successfully climbed the mountain included Asha Kumari Singh, Chunu Shrestha, Maya Gurung, Ngabhang Phuti Sherpa, Nimdoma Sherpa, Pema Diki Sherpa, Pujan Acharya, Shailee Basnet and Usha Bista. They had left for Australia on June 28. A tourism promotion campaign was launched by the government of Nepal at Nanking Darbar Hall, Bangladesh on 5th July with the slogan “Nepal Tourism Year 2011”. With an aspiration to expose tourism industry of Nepal, the program was launched by a campaign team of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) titled “Together for Tourism Year 2011”. The 3rd International Sagarmatha Day is going to be celebrated on May 29 as every year. The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and private sector are organizing various programs to mark the day of the first ascent to the world’s tallest mountain. Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) along with Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and other travel trade associations are jointly organizing a procession on May 29 to celebrate this day. Pokhara, one of the tourist hubs in Nepal hosted a grand launch program of Nepal Tourism Year 2011 on Sunday, 11th April. Sixteen districts from the Western Development region participated in the program with a parade showcasing the cultures of their respective regions. The program showcased three hundred years old Hanuman Naach of Parbat, Lakhe Naach, Yak Dance of the Tibetan refugees, and cultural dances and carnivals of Gurung, Magar, Kumal, Botae and Thakalis. Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) recently released a data that showed a 36.6 percent rise in the tourist arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in March 2010 as compared with the same month last year. The arrivals of visitors from South Asian countries gained a growth of 35.3 percent with increase in Indian tourist by 35.5 percent, Bangladeshis by 53.8 percent, and Pakistanis 3.2 percent. The remarkable rise of tourists was from China with 114 percent in March. Arrivals from Japan, Malaysia and South Korea also saw 6.8 percent, 38.4 percent and 68.1 percent rise respectively. According to NTB, there is 42 percent growth of arrivals from European countries with the arrivals from major countries like UK going up by 44.9 percent, France by 5.4 percent, Germany by 40.8 percent, and Italy by 44 percent and Netherlands by 128.2 percent. The implementation of the procedures for home stay facility targeting the foreign visitors is at its final stage. Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has been working on it to accommodate more visitors in the rural tourist destination. According to Prachanda Man Shrestha, CEO at NTB, the procedure will legalize the accommodations of tourists in normal home that meet the criteria set by them. As per the present legal provisions, tourists can be accommodated only in star hotels and lodges having at least four rooms, and in teahouses along trekking trails. “The home stay procedures will facilitate the operation of establishments having facilities less than the lodges to accommodate foreign visitors,” Shrestha said. Since hotels and lodges equipped with modern facilities are concentrated only in major cities, the government planned the urban home stay policy.
